ZeniMax Media，「DOOM」「Quake」で知られるid Softwareを買収

　現地時間の6月24日，ZeniMax Mediaは，ゲームデベロッパであるテキサスのid Softwareを買収したと発表した。今後，ZeniMax Mediaは傘下のデベロッパであるBethesda Softworksを通じ，パブリッシャとしてid Softwareのサポートを行うことになる。また，id Softwareのゲーム開発は，同社の設立者にしてテクノロジーディレクターのJohn Carmack氏の指揮の下，従来と変わることなく行われ，そのほか，買収に伴う人員の異動やレイオフなども予定されていないとのこと。買収金額は発表されていない。

　ZeniMax Mediaは，上記のように「Fallout 3」（PC/Xbox 360/PS3）や「The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion」で日本でも知られるデベロッパ，Bethesdaを傘下に収める総合メディア企業で，そのほか，モバイル/携帯ゲーム機向けのタイトルを開発するVir2L Studiosと，MMOGを制作するZeniMax Online Studiosを開発スタジオとして持っている。

　1991年に設立されたid Softwareは，「Wolfenstein 3D」や「DOOM」「Quake」といったFPSジャンルを築き上げて発展させたデベロッパであり，ゲームデザインやグラフィックスといった面で常にFPSを引っ張ってきた。現在は，レースゲームとFPSを融合させた「Rage」を開発中で，ゲームに使用されている新エンジン，「id Teck 5」にも注目が集まっている。

　リリースによれば，そのRageと，“id Software監修”という形でウィスコンシンのRaven Softwareが開発を進めている「Wolfenstein」（PC/Xbox 360/PS 3）の2タイトルは，すでに発表されているように，それぞれElectronic ArtsとActivisionから発売される予定だ。Bethesdaブランドでid Softwareのタイトルが登場するのは，それ以降ということになる。

　欧米ゲーム業界の再編成が進む中，「好きなものを好きなように作る」というスタンスを維持する，独立系デベロッパの最後のヒーローであったid Softwareの今回の買収劇。欧米の各ゲームメディアでも大きく報じられており，その衝撃の大きさを物語っているようだ。
